History and Development

On August 3, 1965, the Cabinet passed a resolution to establish the Telecommunications Office under the Ministry of Interior as a temporary special agency. Its mandate was to direct and supervise operations under the Ministry of Interior's telecommunication project, providing communication services to affiliated agencies within the Ministry of Interior and other requesting agencies. The coverage spanned 30 provinces in the Central and Northeastern regions, excluding the Northern and Southern regions, with the communication control zones divided into 5 areas (along with the installation of communication equipment under Phase 1 of the telecommunication project), comprising:

Central Communication Center (Bangkok): Covering Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Saraburi, and Samut Prakan.
Branch Communication Center 1 (Chachoengsao): Covering Prachin Buri, Nakhon Nayok, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat.

The National Executive Council Announcement No. 207, dated September 16, 1972, reorganized the internal structure of the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Interior by dissolving the Telecommunications Office and establishing the Communication Division under the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Interior. It took over the authorities, assets, personnel, etc., of the former Telecommunications Office and expanded the communication network by increasing the communication control zones from 5 to 8 areas (along with the installation of communication equipment under Phase 2 of the telecommunication project), which additionally included Chaiyaphum, Loei, and Prachuap Khiri Khan, as well as:

Branch Communication Center 5 (Phitsanulok): Covering Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, and Uthai Thani.

Later during 1978–1980, the communication network was expanded to cover all provinces nationwide under Phase 3 of the telecommunication project, establishing communication stations in every province except those housing the Regional Communication Centers. In fiscal year 1992, the communication control zones were reorganized into 12 Regional Communication Centers, and digital communication technology was adopted to replace analog systems. Modern telecommunication services were also introduced, including online data communication services. Provincial-level communication services of the Office of the Permanent Secretary for Interior were operated by 63 provincial communication stations, while major provinces serving as regional hubs were operated by the 12 Regional Communication Centers, namely:
